Most security gaps are not caused by a single failed tool. They are caused by an architecture that assumes traffic access is already solved. A switch SPAN port is configured, a security tool is connected, and the organization assumes the tool is receiving the full packet stream.
In production networks, that assumption breaks down quickly. SPAN ports can drop copied traffic under load. Inline appliances can fail closed and take down a link, or fail open and leave traffic uninspected. Encrypted sessions can bypass tools that do not have enough compute to decrypt at line rate.
